Puto – Filipino Recipe (Steamed Muffin)

Puto or steamed muffin is a famous Filipino snack or dessert which can be made from rice flour or all purpose flour.

I believe that puto is present in every public market of the Philippines.  And every province has its own version of puto. In fact when you ride in provincial buses, there are vendors hopping in the bus, selling puto.  And being a puto lover myself, I also have my own version of it, creamy and soft and I love topping it when lots of cheese.

puto Filipino recipe

Ingredients:

For batter
4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup baking powder
1/2  cup white sugar
2 cups evaporated milk or water
1 cup condensed milk
1 cup powdered milk
3 large, whole eggs
4 tablespoons butter (melted)

For Toppings: 1/2 box kraft eden cheese  – cut into small strips

Procedure

1) In a mixing bowl, pour the flour, baking powder, sugar, and powdered milk then mix well. Add the evaporated milk, condensed milk, butter, and eggs then mix well until well blended. Set aside.
2) In a puto molder, pour the batter until approximately 3/4 of it. Top it with cheese strips.
3) Steam for 20-25 minutes. Remove the puto (that has now set) from the molder and put them in a serving plate. Ready to serve. Share and enjoy! 🙂

Hi, do you just add the powdered milk, without adding water, or is the 2 cups mentioned in recipe to reconstitute the powdered milk? Thank you.

Hi! The 2 cups of evaporated milk is not the same with the 1 cup of powdered milk. I used 3 kinds of milk in this recipe to make it tastier and creamier. I used powdered milk, evaporated milk and condensed milk (for sweetening) thank you for asking.
